Blog #1 (Their Eyes Were Watching God)

Blog #1     DUE Saturday,March 17, 2012  by 11:59pm
In the first chapter, porches are presented as the place where people come to congregate, share stories, and express opinions. We learn in the first chapter that they are also the place where the people sitting on them can feel most natural and most human with each other. All day long they feel like “mules and brutes have occupied their skins,” leaving their skins feeling unnatural to them. At the end of the day when they sit on the porch, their skins feel “powerful and human.” The back porch of Janie’s house is where she tells her story to Pheoby.

Answer the following questions thoroughly:
1. What do you think is empowering to the people of Eatonville about porches and porch talk?
2. What can happen on a porch that can’t happen in other places?
3. Where do you go to feel “powerful and human,” either with others or by yourself?
Students: You must respond to one of your peers response to question #3. This should not be something such as "awesome," "wow," or " I like you response." be specific with your response of your peer you have chosen.

  1. 1. I think that porches and porch talk is empowering to the people of Eatonville because they feel like it's the one place where they can express their feelings and opinions on people of the town. It's also important because they are allowed to fellowship and talk with neighbors.

2.On a porch you are able to to have a bond and connection with people where as if you were in your house you are closed off from the community, like how Janie was when she came back. On the porch you are also able to see things more clearly compared to a closed off area.

3.When I want to feel powerful and human I go to my room. I feel as though it's the only place where I can be just me.

  2. 1. I believe that the porches in this book represent a sybmolizem for being open, just how porches are open to the cool breezy air and nature. And with this the people of Eatonville feel more ocmfortable expressing themselves on a porch.

    2. On a porch you can feel comfortable and natural, just at ease with life, unlike in an office or at home. this gives you alot of time to think about anything and when it feels just right, being on a porch could even help you realize answer to some problem because you are able to think freely without distractions.

    3. For me to feel powerful and human, i go on walks around my neighborhood. the light breezy and sunlight help me to express myself better and get a feel of 'real' air, and it just gives me a chance to take a deep breathe.

  3. 1. The porches and porch talks allow the people of the town to express their feelings freely and not be judged or biased. It is also a place where disputes within the town can be settled and people can relax and converse with one another.

    2. On the porch the town shows unity unlike when they're apart from each other. They can laugh and joke with one another because they all know each other and care for one another. They can be honest with each other because it's all out of love opposed to them gossiping and stabbing in the back they may do when they go home or other places.

    3. When I want to feel powerful and human I go to parks to play basketball or outside to get fresh air because in both places I feel free and stress relieved.

    1. Hey dude i agree with u i too use sports to relieve tension epecially negative and aggressive tention. In my opinion i do respect the fact that you use sports and hopefully at least nine times out of ten it works! I believe that sports on a good day allows you to concentrate and regroup and feel empowered. It relieves the negativity but at the exact same time gives you that sense of accomplishment due to your abilities, thus breeding that feeling of empowerment. Good stuff man.

  4. 1. In Eatonville, I think for the people knowing that they are in the comfort of their own home and are able to feel comfortable with their own neighbors to talk about anything and everything that is going on in their lives and around town are the main things that empower the people for their porches and porch talk.

    2. On the porch you are more able to interact with everyone around you. You are able to be comfortable infront of your own home and able to just be yourself without worry. On a porch you also get to see more of the world around you. If you were anywhere outside the comfort of your own home, it's hard to be yourself while relaxing. Also, you dont exclude yourself from chances to get the fresh air that other crowded places dont provide.

    3. When i want to feel "powerful and human", i like to go to the local soccer fields. Either to walk around, play by myself, or most of the times to just sit there by the goal and relax. It's always been a place for me to get away from the world, or just to get the fresh air.

  5. 1. Porches and porch talk is empowering to the people because that area is a place where all of the people can speak their minds with no retaliation. There, they can truly be themselves and talk and do whatever they choose to.

    2. On a porch, as opposed to other places, people can sit and enjoy their surroundings. For a short amount of time you can just sit down, relax, and not worry about anything.

    3. When I want to feel powerful and human I go somewhere I like, like downtown or to an ice skating rink. Both places give me a feeling of empowerment.

  6. 1. I think that what is empowering about porch talk is the ability to be "free". What i mean is a lot of drama and issues take place on the porch and the fact that people can se what goes on in peoples lives and hear about just gives the people an empowered feeling. Also this is like a stage in a theatre a lot goes on in public and these people get to see and experience how other's lives are. The they take note and realize they aren't the only ones who may have issues. Finally, relieving tension is another type of empowerment. Just being open and speakin their minds to crush any inhibitions. Like in the begining, the people didn't hold back how they felt about Janie in the start of the book.

    2. I read it as more of peoples personal lives are being brought to the light. It's as if,unlike outside the porch, people are more open to speak and be who they really are. For example, Dave and Jim were competing to see who won Daisy. Other than the porch, that was never brought up outside the porch or anywhere else. I believe it's more of a positive and negative for the Eatonville's people.

    3. For me i go hangout and talk with scarce friends and listen to my music player. Since I don't vent at all and it takes really good frends to talk to i just remain quiet and listen to music that expresses my feelings or lack of them. I know it's rather strange but i just dont have frends like that that care so mostly im a loner wen it comes to feeling empowered. It's literally as if i get my empowerment from music and seldom care from people. It is character building process in a way.:/

    1. I know what you mean. The friends i have don't really seem to care about generally anything so instead i keep to myself and listen to music. Music, to me, is all someone really needs to feel "human".

  7. 1. I think the people of Eastonville feel empowered speaking on the porches because they can freely express themselves. They also feel some importance because others are listening to what they have to say.

2.On a porch there's a sense of relaxation and (not to sound cheesy) freedom. Porches have the comfortable feeling of home where you can enjoy the company of who your with, while being able to be outdoors.

    3. My place for being 'powerful and human' is definitely just being with my family. I feel completely normal and able to be myself.

    1. I 100% agree Elise(: Being around people that know you the most and love you unconditionally makes it easier to be yourself.

  8. 1. Porch Talk is empowering to the people of Eatonville due to how open the environment is and how well a person can tell if they themselves are socially acceptable. For example, a group of people can be gossiping about a certain individual and while the group may be agreeing against or with someone not there there may be an individual in the group that may suffer from the same troubles and want to fix themselves. Others may just stand up for someone being made fun of such as Phoeby in the beginning of the novel.

    2. Your porch is a place where you can enjoy the neighborhood you live in and a place where people are invited without an invitation, something you can hardly do anywhere else. My Grandmother would always sit on the porch and always have people come up to her and say "good morning" or "how are you today?". This shows how well you can put yourself in your neighborhood and how much more you can be part of where you live.

    3. Surprisingly I enjoy going to school to feel "Powerful and Human". The reason for this is because I'm surrounded by people who I know. I'm not very important in my household but when are friends who call me out just because they want to talk it makes me feel more alive than i usually do.

  9. 1.What I think that's empowering about the people of Eatonville to engage on porch talk is that it gives the people's a feeling or a sense of security, safety and it gives them the feeling of more freedom in a sense. Like for example, we know many men and women, but more men that go to Vegas, and we all know what happens in Vegas. Well Vegas in this example is the porch, they can do many things that they wouldn't do on a regular basis.

2.In regards to being in a porch, since it empowers people to act differently than usually. There's things that can happen in a porch that wouldn't usually happen in other places. Things such as talking about their past, or just to stop and relax. Now we can do any of these things, but we usually don't basically because we cant seem to fit these things in our daily life's, even back then.

    3. A place in which i feel human or powerful would be in my room, simply because i feel more relaxed in there.

  10. 1.) The people of Eattonville feel empowered over the action of porch talk because its basically a place where you are supported and able to freely talk about anything. It kind of reminds me of my Daughters On A Journey group. We talk about our situations with families, school, and life. Which I think shows some similar actions with porch talk.

2.) Well like I said before, the porch is a place to speak freely about anything. But there are some things you would'nt tell other people. So basically the porch is a place where you would talk about things you normally wont tell anybody else.

3.) I prefer to be by myself in my room with music in my ears in order to feel "powerful and human". Its a time where i can get myself together.

  11. 1- The porch and the talk that goes on is empowering because when they go there they are able to say whatever is on there mind and not feel judged by the others that are listening.

2- The porch to me represents a place where they can go have conversations that just aren't possible with other people. They all have a special bond with one another.

3- My inner sanctum or place of comfort would be my room with my earphones away from the world where i can clear my head and relax.

  12. 1. I believe that what is empowering to the people of Eatonville about porches and porch talk is ,the fact that at the end of a long day, they finally have a place to rest, relax and be themselves with the people who they feel open and comfortable around. Also, no matter what drama occurs, the porch is where everyone seems to come together and not let drama ruin things.

    2. In these times, something that can happen on a porch that couldn’t happen in other places is that they get to full be themselves. Instead of feeling like the "mules and brutes" that they feel occupy their skin, they get to let their true personalities show.

    3. The location that I go to feel “powerful and human,” is anywhere outside when the weather is nice and it is quiet enough for me to get into my own "zone" and be filled with nothing but my own thoughts.

  13. 1.Porches and porch talk is empowering to the people of Eatonville because they have a place where they can share their feelings while also having a fun time talking about any and everything. Also without people going back and telling who ever what was said.

    2. What can happen on the porch that can't happen nowhere else is you can be as loud as you want, speak freely, show any kind of emotion, and even though that may not be your porch, you feel at home with the people you are surrounded by.

    3. To feel “powerful and human,”I go to a park and play dominoes wit my uncle and grandma because its a place where we talk about EVERYTHING, and whatever is said, stays at the table. In general its a place that i feel loved the most with the two people around me.

  14. 1. The concept of engaging in “porch talk” is an important part of everyday life for the people of Eatonville. It allows them to assemble in a comfortable environment which unifies the community through their open and honest discussions. Porches provide a complacent atmosphere for Eatonville to interact without complete vulnerability.

    2. A porch is different from any other location because it is a place that is close to home therefore providing comfort and a feeling of security. You can be open, speak freely, have fun, and most importantly be yourself. A porch can be a symbolic representation of the idea of inviting peers to view portions of who or what someone or something is but doesn’t allow complete access to inner aspects. This can be paralleled to the biased perceptions of the character Janie. The other characters only saw certain parts of Janie but never saw the depth of her character.

    3. In order to feel “powerful and human” I’d either go to my room, or to the gym, and reflect whatever I’m experiencing through my dance. Dancing helps me to completely express myself and builds my confidence. It also pushes me and increases my desire to be better at everything I do in life.

  15. 1. I think porches and porch talk is a significant part of life for the people in Eatonville because its a time and place where the community can converse with one another about important events, issues, and even gossip.I think when any person can express their opinion and be listened to makes them feel empowered and like they are a vital part to their community.

2.Easy communication with your neighbors and fellow citizens when they simply walk by is one example of something that can happen on a porch rather than anywhere else.

3.A place I most often go to feel powerful and human is my own home.I know that in my home I have a valued opinion and im just valued overall.I can count on my family to lift me up when i am down and be a constant motivation .No one can make you feel more human than the people who know you best.My family knows the right thing to do at the right time.

  16. 1.I believe the porch and porch talk is empowering to the people of eatonville because it allows them to sit back and think about there life and whats going on in others life. They are allowed to voice their opinions without having to hold their tongue.

    2. Unlike other places, the porch is a haven where their opinion can be voice, without it being an outburst from the others. in other places your voice and actions are limited. The porch is something that is their own and all of them has one. This allows them to do or act as they please.

3.When I am by myself, to feel powerful and human I often go to my room and listen to music that gives me that feeling. In my room I know that i have the power to rule what happens in there. I can show my feelings or give my opinion without havingg to worry if I offened anyone. This gives me my since of impowerment when I feel I am no longer human.
